Missouri Republicans shut out 300,000+ voters to lock in a Trump-backed map

The Republican secretary of state rejected a referendum signed by more than 300,000 Missourians.

Local officials had already approved well over the required 111,000 signatures. He waited until the legal deadline, then said no.

A judge then let the Republican-friendly map be used this November and kept the measure off the ballot. The judge said the referendum process does not apply to congressional maps passed by the Legislature. The Missouri Supreme Court could still step in.

Republican lawmakers redrew the lines last year at Donald Trump’s urging to add another safe seat, likely handing the party seven of Missouri’s eight seats.

They stretched Kansas City’s 5th District deep into rural central Missouri to favor Republicans. That weakens the voice of Kansas City families.

The citizens’ group People Not Politicians did the work and turned in hundreds of thousands of signatures. The Republican secretary of state said the constitution bars voters from weighing in on congressional maps and tossed the petition anyway.

Missouri was the second Republican-led state, after Texas, to answer Trump’s call to redraw districts to the GOP’s advantage.

You do not have to be a Democrat to see the problem. If politicians redraw districts to help themselves, your community gets less say and worse service.

If you want fair play, back leaders who let the people decide, not the ones who block a vote.
