DeSantis map favors GOP in 24 of 28 districts
Florida just approved a congressional map that could hand Republicans up to four new House seats.
Gov. Ron DeSantis called a special session and pushed it through. The votes were 83-28 in the House and 21-17 in the Senate.
Under these lines, Republicans are favored in 24 of 28 districts. Seats in Tampa and Orlando are targeted. Two South Florida seats shift right.
Florida’s Fair District rules say maps cannot be drawn with partisan intent. A DeSantis aide reportedly said he considered partisan data while drawing the new lines.
Lawmakers moved it the same day the U.S. Supreme Court tossed Louisiana’s map. DeSantis said he had anticipated that ruling.
Florida Democrats plan to challenge. These lines are set to shape who gets heard in November.
Other states moved too. Missouri Republicans redrew their map at Donald Trump’s urging. A judge allowed that map to be used this fall, and the state Supreme Court may weigh in. The plan likely gives them seven of eight seats. Texas and North Carolina also redrew to give Republicans an edge.
The new lines are built to help one side win.
