State orders raises. Wake schools weigh cuts to cover $17 million hole.
Wake County schools face a $17 million gap this year. The school board is weighing cuts to cover state-ordered raises and bonuses. The state set the raises but did not send enough to pay for them. Local outlet WRAL reports the shortfall is $17.6 million.
When state leaders require pay changes without full funding, districts must raise local money or cut elsewhere. Wake is looking at cuts. That means tighter school services and less support where kids learn, even as families already feel stretched.
Fund what you order, or stop ordering it.
The problem goes beyond Wake County. In Washington, nearly all House Republicans voted to reduce food help, shrinking SNAP for about 4.5 million Americans. President Donald Trump lifted tariffs he had imposed, which makes it easier and cheaper to sell foreign beef here.
When leaders pass the cost down, schools cut and families feel it.
You don’t have to switch teams to see what is broken. If you want schools that work and leaders who can count, vote out the people who keep creating gaps and cutting basics in 2026.
