Supreme Court stops Missouri’s GOP map again. Voters keep 2022 lines.
Missouri voters will use the 2022 map again this November.
The U.S. Supreme Court stopped the new Republican map for the third time this month. The court warned that a late switch would cause “electoral chaos” and said ballots are already out, including absentee, military, and overseas ballots.
Republicans pushed the 2025 map to gain a seventh House seat. They already hold six of eight seats.
The map also reshaped Kansas City’s 5th District by pulling out parts of the city. That change would reduce Kansas City’s voting power.
Missourians pushed back. A citizen group, People Not Politicians, secured a referendum so voters can decide whether to accept the 2025 map.
State Republican officials tried to block that vote. The Missouri Supreme Court said the petition is legal, and the new map cannot take effect unless voters approve it.
Voters will decide in the referendum.
Donald Trump blasted the courts and demanded the partisan map anyway. The justices said no and kept the rules steady because election processes were already underway.
As we reported on September 27, Republican mapmakers backed by Trump tried to lock in more power by changing lines. Today’s rulings keep the current lines in place while voting is underway. That stability matters when people are already casting ballots.
Check your district under the 2022 map if you vote in Missouri. Watch for the referendum that will decide the 2025 map. In 2026, voters will decide whether to keep or replace officials who backed the new lines. Send this to someone who still thinks this is just “normal politics.”
