Abbott Threatens Safety Funds to Control Cities

You do not have to be a Democrat to see this is wrong.

When a governor threatens your city’s public safety money, the basics stop being basic.

Greg Abbott did exactly that.

Four times in less than four weeks, he used the threat of pulling public safety grants to make Texas cities fall in line, according to the Texas Tribune.

That money is supposed to keep people safe.

Not serve as a hammer.

This week it was Grand Prairie. A local Eid celebration at a water park drew protests. Abbott jumped in and demanded the event be canceled, calling it unconstitutional religious discrimination. He warned the city it would lose $530,000 in public safety grants if it didn’t comply. The city canceled within hours. His office later lifted the hold.

Last month, he went after Houston, Dallas, and Austin too. He threatened to yank nearly $150 million to force quick policy changes on local police cooperation with federal immigration agents–Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Dallas was told more than $55 million in World Cup public safety funding could be at risk.

He has used this playbook before, including threats over so-called ‘sanctuary’ policies and even warning cities about transportation dollars tied to rainbow crosswalks.

This is not public safety.

This is muscle over maintenance. Control over competence.

Experts say it’s part of a broader Republican push to use executive power to squeeze cities. And it’s not just Texas. In Colorado, Republicans in Congress are targeting Denver and Boulder over local ‘sanctuary’ policies.

You can back the police. You can want secure borders. And still say: don’t gamble with the money that keeps our towns safe.

Basics first.

You do not have to be a Democrat. You just have to want a government that fixes things instead of breaking them to win a headline.

Treat 2026 like emergency maintenance for the republic.

Fire the arsonists. Hire the repair crew.
