State orders, local cuts: Wake schools cover a $17.6M gap
Wake County’s school board voted to cut its own budget to cover a $17.6 million gap tied to state-approved pay raises and bonuses.
The vote was 7-2. Leaders warned classrooms will feel it.
When the state orders pay bumps and delays the budget, districts get stuck with the bill. ABC11 reported that parents blasted the uncertainty from state delays, and the board chair said the reductions will hit the classroom.
To close the gap, the board shifted money from the district’s fund balance for one-time bonuses. They cut the restart schools fund balance. They cut the substitute teacher budget. They also trimmed a local salary supplement for veteran teachers to save about $1.9 million. They did not cut per-student classroom supply money.
Fewer subs. Smaller reserves. Classrooms feel it.
Teachers and certified staff are set for an average 8% raise, with 3% for noncertified staff. Pay will come in September with back pay for July and August. The plan relies on one-time fixes and uses reserves that will not last a school year.
Basic competence means passing a state budget on time and funding mandates instead of shifting costs to districts in the middle of the year. Families should not have to guess whether their child’s school has a sub or whether veteran teachers lose pay support because the state failed to pass a budget on time.
